The London-based female-led theatre company is highlighting misconceptions their artists have experienced

Migrant theatre company LegalAliens Theatre has launched a podcast and interactive digital platform, THINGS I AM NOT. The podcast features ten original audio monologues, each written and performed by female artists who have migrated to the UK.

In announcing the project, the theatre group said it wants to show an “unfiltered reflection on the daily experience of life at the intersection of womanhood and migration”.

LegalAliens Theatre was set up almost 10 years ago to give female migrants, refugees and asylum seekers a platform to feel seen and represented onstage.

THINGS I AM NOT is made to challenge stereotypes migrant women endure, from “benefit scrounger” to victim.

Rather than talking about their journey in coming to the UK, LegalAliens Theatre has chosen to focus on the micro and macro aggressions the artists have faced in their daily life and can do so in any style and method they wish.

The company hopes the podcast will spark conversations for their listeners. They are inviting listeners to respond to the series by producing artwork in the form of audio, video, images, or text.

The theatre company was forced to close its doors under lockdown, cutting off income. However, a grant from the Arts Council has allowed the company to start its latest online project and continue workshops.

THINGS I AM NOT launched on International Women’s Day and will continue to release monologues every Monday on their website.
