These shows have a more relatable, accurate and positive portrayal of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers
There are many films, series and plays featuring migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. But their representation isn’t always positive. However, there are a few that don’t feature stereotypical characters and one-dimensional plotlines.
Ramy
This show is a favourite due to its relatable storyline. A second generation immigrant gets caught between his religion and a free-spirited millennial generation – something many Muslims have to deal with in Western society.

Paddington travelled to London from the jungles of Peru after a fire destroyed his home. The author behind the books, Michael Bond, drew inspiration from his wartime memories of evacuation and refugees when creating Paddington bear. The story is now used worldwide to teach children how to treat refugees.
Home
Sami, an asylum seeker from Syria, finds himself living with a family in Dorking. Rather than centring the story on Sami’s journey, Home focuses on his life in the UK. Making it a comedy is also a change from watching gloomy and serious fiction.

The Jungle does a great job of showing the brutal reality many refugees faced in the Calais Jungle before its demolishment. It’s also inclusive, showcasing various characters’ different experiences, showing viewers that not all refugees share the same story.
